On the 19th of March 2021, a volcanic eruption started only 30 km from our main stables just outside of Reykjavik. The volcano, Fagradalsfjall (e. mountain of the beautiful valley), had been dormant for over 6000 years and this was the first eruption on the Reykjanes peninsula in 800 years. This unexpected eruption, which produced enormous amounts of lava flowing through valleys and surrounding mountains, came to an end (at least temporarily) almost as abruptly as it had started, in mid-September.
Time will tell whether Fagradalsfjall volcano will remain dormant for another 8000 years or start again soon but exploring these freshest lava fields in Iceland and the surrounding area is sure to make for an unforgettable experience.
While we will not ride to the crater itself as it’s surrounded by kilometres of impassable lava, we invite you to explore with us the surrounding areas, filled with geological activity with bubbly mud pools and hot springs and colours and scenery that seems out of this world.
The best way to experience these sights is of course on the Icelandic horse which has evolved to traverse them.
It is an optional choice to hike to the volcano.
We will overnight at the Hotel Vellir in Hafnarfjördur in a comfortable cottage with full-board provided.
We will pick you up at the BSI Bus Terminal in Reykjavik in the morning and drive to the Ishestar riding center. There we will pick some horses for the ride and ride through moss covered lava fields towards the volcano Helgafell. We will ride around it through outlandish landscapes. We will have a picnic break on the way. After that we will drive you to your hotel where you can settle in and later enjoy dinner.
We drive with the horses to Raudholar and start our ride at the red hills. We will ride through the lava fields of Heidmoerk with views over Blafjall and the craters of Burfell and Helgafell. The terrain is beautiful to experience the amazing gaits of our horses.
After a nice breakfast, we will gear up and head out for our riding tour. We will drive to the Geothermal area of Krýsuvik where we start our ride. We will climb up into a mountain range and enjoy black gravel deserts and amazing views towards all directions.
We head back to base after a day’s adventure on horseback, we will have a lovely dinner and relax before our next adventure.
After a great riding day we have to say goodbye to your horses and bring you back to Reykjavik.
You will be accommodated in the Hotel Vellir in Hafnarfjörður (20 minutes from Reykjavik).
Depending on the eruptions in Reykjanes we might have to change the itinerary on day 3

Here you can book your Flybus ticket to and from Reykjavík. The Flybus departs from Keflavík airport 35-40 minutes after each arrival. Busses are located right outside the terminal building.
